This type of competition uses the "winner stays up" method. Judoka's from all three clubs were lined up by size and divided into two teams. Each team was then lined up according to size and started the shiai with the two smallest competitors fighting. The winner would stay on the mat to fight the next biggest competitor and continue until losing, scoring points along the way. The winner would be the Judoka that scored the highest amount of points. It was a great night and a perfect opportunity to practice all that has been learned throughout the year! Well, we did/do!!

There is an article that writes about needing shin-gi-tai (spirit, skill and power) in order to win in judo. This past weekend our Judoka began to see the importance of having the three work together in a match and that hard work pays off in competition. It was apparent to all that played in McCall's Tournament this past weekend, not only learned something valuable from each and every fight but began to show pride in themselves and our club, as well as leaving with their heads held high!
We want to thank the coaches that made sure that after each match, everyone participating had a chance for one on one instruction. It was evident that this teaching led to better understanding and performance from all of our Judoka!! Thank you for making this a priority! Our club might not have been felt by the numbers of competitors but we did make our presence known through our shin-gi-tai in matches! Congratulations Boise Valley Judo Club! We are all very proud of all you accomplished and learned this weekend!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://boisevalleyjudo.blogspot.com/2009/03/got-shin-gi-tai-well-we-did.html' title='Got shin-gi-tai? For those that are unfamiliar with this tradition, it is like many cultures that start the New Year with a chance to clean out the old and bring everyone together to bring in the new. We will have a gathering of our friends and members to share a brief practice and then gather for some traditional Japanese Bean Soup made by Midori Koyama and O-Mochi to share. (Mochi is rice that is pounded into a glutinous mass and then formed into cakes.) This will be followed by snacks and desserts to celebrate with. Many Dojos around the world have celebrated with similar celebrations that can consist of week long practices, demonstrations and a lot of parties. It is my hope that our small version of this tradition will suffice to bring us all together and unite for a fruitful New Year.
It is also at this time of year that many try to start the New Year off on a good foot by listing resolutions and making promises to do things differently this time. Unfortunately this tradition causes undo stress for many and can make us feel worse about ourselves than when we started if we are unable to complete our goals. As we prepare for a busy tournament season, our own hectic preparations for BVJ tournament, work, school, or whatever occupies most of our time, it is important for us to realize that the current economy and state of world will cause much undo stress for us and we will all handle it in different ways. It is very important to remember what Kano O-Sensei has taught us that Judo fundamentals are "Mutual Welfare and Benefit." For those of you that have applied this to the practice of Judo only...you have missed the message! Judo is the facilitator for you to carry out this standard in all you do. Whether work, school, how you act toward your fellow man...we are all in this together! I learn from you...you may learn from me. You each possess talents and skills that some one may need, but not know how to ask. It is my hope that this year you will all continue to strive to be in tune with your surroundings and that we may all grow by helping each other through possible tough times.
Val Brisbin

Kagami Biraki ~ or translated "Mirror Opening"

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 171px; height: 148px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_8ksQkp_1bmE/SVg1MWEA-EI/AAAAAAAAAnY/rc25qpxiy5U/s200/kagami_biraki_3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5285032648916400194" /> <img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 173px; height: 200px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_8ksQkp_1bmE/SVg0oUo2dzI/AAAAAAAAAnQ/kJpJQ0dN6ks/s200/kagami_biraki_1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5285032030058739506" /> <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 82px; height: 114px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_8ksQkp_1bmE/SVg0iznROcI/AAAAAAAAAnI/LJPeXWeOVUc/s200/dojo.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5285031935294388674" /> Many traditional Japanese martial arts organizations welcome the new year with a traditional celebration of renewal and spiritual rededication. Known as Kagami Biraki, the tradition dates back to an old Samurai family practice that started in the 15th century. It was brought into modern judo by Sensei Jigoro Kano in 1884.
For Judoka today, the Kagami Biraki will have no religious significance. However, it is set up as a time for students to engage in a common purpose and devote their spirit, effort and discipline toward goals, such as training.
Celebrations are different in various dojos. Traditionally each dojo is cleaned and refreshed. Especially the mirrors which hold many symbolic meanings during this celebration. We appreciate all that came to help tidy up our dojo during our last practice for the year!
Traditionally, Kagami Biraki officially falls on January 11th but in many dojo's it is usually held on the second Saturday or Sunday of January, or a date most convenient for all dojo participants. Our dojo, will be celebrating on Monday, January 5, 2009 with dojo members, honored guests and others who would like to join us!!

A Note About Thursday, December 18th.

This Thursday, we will be having a special "Winter Clean Up" during practice!
